If you’re going to learn a new language, you can’t try to be perfect. You’ll stop yourself from talking. You just have to let go.

Sometimes it can feel like there are a billion people on my shoulders.

Friendship first, competition second. That’s a very famous Chinese expression.

In America it’s: Game is game. Friendship is friendship.

Fortune cookies are a good idea. If the message is positive, it can make your day a little better.

The question of courage is something I’ve thought about for a long time. Tell me if I’m wrong, but courage is when a man in a difficult situation acts as if he truly believes he’s right. And in the end, he is right.

When I was young, we were taught not to dunk. We were taught not to stand out from the rest of the team. It’s different now. The young guys in China are new age. They want to show their stuff. But I am old-school. It was a big adjustment when I first came here to play at a camp. The coaches told me to dunk, but I would lay the ball in. Finally, the coaches made everyone else on my team run laps when I didn’t dunk. I didn’t want my teammates to be punished because of me. That’s how I learned to dunk.

A good leader must be fair.

There was a game when I was perfect from the field. The 2001 season in China. Finals. But my team lost. So I guess it wasn’t a perfect game.

I can’t say exactly when it changed. But when I came into the NBA, I felt like I was challenging everyone I went up against. After a while, it felt like they were challenging me.

The alcohol in China is made of rice. It’s strong. You know it’s strong when you drink it. So you have an idea what it can do to you. But here, you have alcohol that doesn’t taste very strong. So you think you can have many shots. You don’t find out the truth until the next morning.

I haven’t done much trash-talking. But last year, I did complain about a call. Nobody could believe it. So I said, “I’ve spent a lot on English lessons. I want to get my money’s worth.” The official was laughing.

My American strength coach says he liked me better before I could talk English.

We don’t have a tip culture in China. If you give a tip to an old waiter, he might feel like you don’t respect him. But I think the younger waiters would take it.

When I got my first paycheck playing in China, I thought, I’m making money now! I’m independent! That first month I went broke. My next paycheck was two weeks away and I didn’t have anything in my pocket. That was a good experience to have before coming to the NBA.

Our first emperor, Qin Shi Huangdi. Napoleon. Roosevelt. That would make a good table for dinner.

Power means different things in different times. But the more I read, the more I think power is about intelligence.

Kobe’s heart is as strong as his muscles.

Our honeymoon was in Europe. One stop was Venice. Cost fifty dollars for a ride in the gondola. There was also the romantic package. Three hundred dollars. That gets a bottle of red wine and a man playing music. But I don’t really drink red wine. And you can hear the music coming from the other boats. So the fifty-dollar package seemed like the way to go.

I dream in Chinese.

One man cannot change the entire game. Support is necessary.

Sometimes my wife and I mix Chinese and English words in the same sentence. We call it Chinglish.

If I could get the fortune cookie I wanted, it would say: No more injuries.

I felt that I twisted my ankle when I fell down. If it was a regular-season game, I probably would have come out and told the trainer we need to look at it. But it was a playoff game against the Lakers. The first home game. I twisted it again in the third quarter. Then again in the fourth. I can’t blame myself. No true player would want to leave the court in that situation. This was not about Chinese culture or American culture. It was about the culture of being a competitor.

The doctor told me the worst case: There’s less than 1 percent chance that you can die during the surgery. That’s a risk.

Sports teach you how to be quick. Injuries teach you how to slow down.

They had to change the angle of the ankle in order to release the pressure from one bone to another. There will be a lot of rehab. The best lesson my parents taught me was patience. I’m going to need it.

ESPN网站英文原文在此：NBA to alter traveling rules 。

(”A player who receives the ball while he is progressing or upon completion of a dribble, may take two steps in coming to a stop, passing or shooting the ball.”)

Club makes quick use of fund to sign Ariza

As one player moved in, the Rockets offered the strongest indication yet that center Yao Ming will be out.

While Yao considers his treatment options, the NBA formally agreed with the Rockets that Yao is likely to miss all of the 2009-10 season. By granting the Rockets the disabled player exception, worth $5.854 million for the upcoming season, the NBA ruled the hairline fracture of the tarsal navicular bone in Yao’s left foot and the surgery he likely will undergo to treat it will keep him out all season.

The Rockets used the salary-cap exception Wednesday to sign free-agent guard/forward Trevor Ariza, saving the mid-level exception (worth the same amount) they had offered him for future moves.

Granting the injury exception indicates the NBA agrees with the Rockets’ contention that Yao’s injury will require season-ending surgery, rather than the more conservative option of immobilizing the injury again in the hope that his hairline fracture would heal without surgery.

Yao has been given several surgical options, including one that would use small plates, rather than the pins used last season, a bone graft and an alteration of the operation of his foot in an effort to treat the injury and avoid another recurrence. There have been discussions about a more experimental procedure that would increase blood flow to the area, though that seems a less likely option.

Center still optimistic

Yao’s agent, John Huizinga, said Wednesday that Yao has not come to a decision about the recommendations made by the specialists he has seen and has not ruled out trying a nonsurgical treatment.

“The Rockets have kept me informed of what they are doing and why,” Yao said in a statement. “I support them in their efforts to make our team as good as possible. My focus is on selecting the best treatment option for my injured foot and committing myself to do what I can to ensure a complete recovery.

“I am optimistic about the future, and I will return to playing basketball when my foot has fully healed.”

If Yao were to choose a surgery and recover quickly enough to play next season, it would not effect the disabled player exception the Rockets have received.

But at the very least, it looms as Yao’s fifth consecutive season to be interrupted, ended or missed because of a bone injury.

Rockets general manager Daryl Morey would not comment about the likelihood Yao will opt for surgery and miss the season.

“I don’t want to put a timetable on Yao,” he said. “I don’t want to comment on it. I want to be respectful of Yao. I want to be very careful in any of our Yao Ming announcements.”

Yao, 28, had pins placed in the same bone in February 2008. Yao recovered in time to resume workouts in less than five months and was able to play in the Olympics and in 77 regular-season games without problems.

The bone cracked again, however, on May 8 in Game 3 of the Rockets’ Western Conference semifinals series against the Los Angeles Lakers. Yao and the Rockets were shocked when a CT scan showed June 24 that it had not healed and had instead gotten worse.

Yao has two seasons remaining on his contract. Though he was expected to exercise his right to opt out after next season, missing all of the season likely would lead him to remain under his current Rockets contract through the 2010-11 season.

A string of injuries

Yao’s injury could end his injury-plagued, on-court partnership with Tracy McGrady, who is rehabilitating after season-ending microfracture surgery and is entering the final season of his contract.

A seven-time All-Star, Yao has averaged 19.1 points on 52.5 percent shooting in his career, adding 9.3 rebounds and 1.9 blocked shots per game. In the playoffs, he has averaged 19.8 points and 9.3 rebounds in 28 games, advancing past the first round for the first time in four playoff appearances with this past season’s victory over the Portland Trail Blazers.

Yao missed the previous postseason, also with a hairline fracture of his tarsal navicular bone in his left foot.

In the 2006-07 season, he suffered a hairline fracture on his right anterior medial tibial plateau (leg) in December 2006, missing 32 games before returning late in the season. He played in that season’s seven-game playoff series against the Utah Jazz, though he was not at full strength after coming back from the injury.

Yao missed the final four games of the 2005-06 season when he fractured the fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot.

The four consecutive seasons with injuries followed three seasons to begin his career in which he missed just two games.

No national television, but “more adversity” for Rockets

No national television, but “more adversity” for Rockets

Lakers Waive Sun Yue.

The Los Angeles Lakers have waived guard Sun Yue, it was announced today.

“With the talent level and depth of our roster, the situation simply doesn’t provide an opportunity for Sun Yue to get the chance to play that he deserves,” said General Manager Mitch Kupchak. “We feel it is in Sun’s best interests to be able to go to a team where he can get the minutes to play and showcase his considerable talents. We appreciate Sun’s contributions to last season’s championship team, and wish him the best of luck with the rest of his career.”

Lakers guard Sun Yue

“I want to thank Sun Yue for his professionalism and for the contributions he made to our team last season,” said Lakers Head Coach Phil Jackson. “Although Sun did not get an opportunity to play many minutes, he worked hard in practice and was a joy to be around. We also enjoyed the cultural influence he brought to our players, coaches and organization. Sun is a young player who will no doubt continue to improve in the coming years, and I wish him the best of luck.”

Originally selected by the Lakers in the second round (40th overall) of the 2007 NBA Draft, Sun signed with the Lakers the following summer (August 25, 2008) shortly after representing China as a member of the Men’s Olympic Basketball Team in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Making his NBA debut on December 7 versus Milwaukee with four points on 2-of-3 shooting in five minutes, Sun appeared in 10 games with the Lakers last season, totaling six points, two assists, a steal and a blocked shot in 28 minutes.

Sun, who became the 25th NBA player assigned to a D-League affiliate last season, also played 6 games in two stints with the D-Fenders, averaging 9.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.33 blocks in 33.3 minutes.

BEIJING — With 1.3 billion potential fans, China is increasingly seen as a financial promised land for N.B.A. stars through endorsement deals, and the league itself has established a robust organization here valued at $2 billion.

But China’s own professional league, the Chinese Basketball Association, has hardly enjoyed a smooth ascendance alongside this country’s basketball boom. American players and agents describe broken contracts, unpaid wages, suspicions of game-fixing and rising resentment toward foreign players. Several players have left China after failing to receive paychecks. Last month, the league announced that it lost $17 million last season, which ended in May.

Players and coaches in China’s professional league said problems escalated last season after the association loosened salary and court-time restrictions on foreign players, part of an effort to heighten the game’s appeal to China’s growing N.B.A fan base and to bring in more lucrative sponsorship deals. The association also hoped the prowess of imported players would help bolster China’s basketball prospects for the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Bonzi Wells, a former N.B.A. player who signed with the Chinese team Shanxi Zhongyu in 2008, rested during a game against the Beijing Ducks in Taiyuan, China, in January.

The efforts yielded conflicting results. TV ratings soared, and foreign players found starring roles — the top 15 scorers were non-Chinese, and players like Bonzi Wells and Dontae’ Jones — who had less than stellar N.B.A. careers — frequently scored more than 40 points a game. At the same time, the dominance of foreign players fueled frustration.

“Foreigners should play supporting roles, not dominate the game,” said Zhang Xiong, director of operations for the Chinese Basketball Association.

Li Xiaofeng, 20, a restaurant manager and C.B.A. fan, said: “I don’t like foreign players. They got most of the chances to shoot and score. How about our own players? They don’t have the chance to bring their skill and talent into play.

“Our Chinese players’ ability is limited by the current rule.”

Some Chinese state news media outlets went so far as to call imported players a “malignant tumor.”

Meanwhile, China’s most prominent homegrown player, Yao Ming, is an N.B.A. star. This month he bought the financially troubled Shanghai Sharks, for whom he played five seasons before joining the N.B.A.

Chinese players like Wang Yong of the Dongguan Leopards support the increased participation of foreign players. “Chinese and foreign players are a harmonious blend,” he said. “I’ve learned a lot from them this season and feel I am a better player.”

Foreign players bridled at accusations that they were selfish, saying they were simply following orders.

“The coaches tell you you’re the main scorer,” said Corsley Edwards, an American who played for the Yunnan Bulls last season.

The dominance of international players is not the only systemic problem in the 18-team league. Coaches, visiting players and their agents suspect that the outcome of some games is predetermined.

Players recounted locker-room lectures in which they were told to slack off on the court. On other occasions, they said, the best players had to sit out particularly competitive games or were sent home once their teams made the playoffs.

Gabe Muoneke, an American player who joined the Yunnan Bulls last season, said he was told by a Chinese teammate that a game against the Shanghai Sharks in November was fixed.

“He said, ‘Listen, my bookie told me we’re going to win today, so don’t worry,’” Muoneke said.

At the time, Shanghai and Yunnan were the two worst teams in the league, both without a victory. The Bulls won, 107-97.

Muoneke said the incident confirmed what he and other players have long suspected: that game-fixing is a problem for the Chinese league.

“It’s common knowledge that Chinese teams bribe referees,” he said.

Awvee Storey, a former N.B.A. player with the Liaoning Hunters, said he often sensed his Chinese teammates were going through the motions. “I felt a lot of times we were playing just to play and not to win,” he said.

The league and Storey’s team denied allegations of game-fixing. The Yunnan Bulls contended that their international players did not understand Chinese basketball.

“C.B.A. referees are not very good,” said Wu Li, a team spokesman for the Liaoning Hunters. “Lots of people think referees make bad calls because they are being influenced by teams or coaches, but we don’t know of any proven cases.”

Wu went on to say that the foreign players’ bad attitudes caused many problems.

When asked about game-fixing, Zhang of the C.B.A. said, “There haven’t been any problems like that.”

Giovanni C. Funiciello, an agent who has sent players to China for more than eight years, said that although most games are played fairly, betting is a problem.

“Do I think some games to a degree are influenced?” he said. “Yeah, I would say so.”

The accusations have led to a spate of articles in the state-controlled Chinese news media about game-fixing and bribery, and the league vowed to crack down on such cheating.

Although the C.B.A. has denied the accusations, in November it announced harsher penalties for official misconduct. Social interactions between referees and team officials are now prohibited.

“This season we will put a knife to the neck of any referee who is involved in match-fixing or bribery,” Liu Xiaonong, the commissioner of the C.B.A., said last year, according to China Daily. “If a league is frequently linked to rumors of match-fixing, it means it has a big problem.”

Liu recently told Beijing Youth Daily that because of increased expenses from the C.B.A.’s expanded schedule, “the operation of the league and clubs are both in danger.”

The N.B.A. is undoubtedly watching these developments with interest. It has created an operation here that involves marketing partnerships, merchandising and events. Companies including Bank of China and ESPN invested $253 million to acquire a stake in the N.B.A. endeavor. The N.B.A. is also involved with building 12 basketball arenas in China.

“I’m not aware of cheating, but we’re not involved with it,” said David Stern, the commissioner of the N.B.A. “That’s totally 100 percent under control of the C.B.A., and they’ve made it clear they’d like to keep it that way.”

The Chinese league also faces allegations by its players that teams have reneged on contracts or failed to pay salaries.

Many former N.B.A. players were lured to China by six-figure salaries, in addition to free meals, lodging and family visits. Local players, by contrast, earn about $14,000 a season.

Faced with ballooning budgets and bleak championship prospects, some owners chose to throw in the towel, leaving imports unpaid and abandoned.

The story is familiar to players like Muoneke and Edwards, who left the Yunnan Bulls over contract disputes. Edwards played for three months, then the team’s general manager told him he would not be paid the rest of his salary. Filing a claim with the league got him nowhere, Edwards said.

His Chinese teammates face a similar plight. In May, long after their season ended, they sent a letter to the C.B.A. saying they had yet to receive 70 percent of their salaries and other compensation. The matter remains unresolved.
